I originally drafted this post the week after this trip, but life got in the way. So when I wrote, “Last weekend,” I really should have worded it, “back in May.” That said, I decided to write this disclaimer instead of correcting my original wording. Because why not?
Last weekend, I traveled to Indiana to spectate at the first stop of the World Fitness Project – a brand new, elite fitness competition. Per uzhe (well, how would you spell that?), I went with my in-laws, Liam & Sara. It was a fun weekend, despite the fact that I ended up a bit under the weather. Call it one of my Mother’s Day gifts from TG, who always gives me the nicest things. Thankfully, I didn’t feel too awful. Of course, coffee helped. And açaí bowls, natch.
Given that this was the very first competition of the WFP, I think it was put together pretty well, though there’s plenty of room for improvement. I’d like to see an expanded vendor village, though I’m sure some (cough, Hubs, cough) would say that more shopping opportunities are not really necessary – lol.
The entry to WFP – May 9-11, 2025
But, the shopping was not even my favorite part of the weekend. Nor was watching the action. The highlights for me were watching the competition up close and all of the personal interactions with some of my favorite athletes!
Right after we took our seats on the first day, I spied Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdotter behind us in the bleachers. I had to fangirl. They are so gorgeous in person!
I love watching Dani Speegle. She’s such a powerhouse. Catch her on American Ninja Warrior!
Finally got to meet the Wooley Memeth (John Wooley) and as a bonus Saxon Panchik. In the midst of conversing with these two, John mentioned that he’s in his fifties and Saxon was surprised (odd, because they’ve known each other for some time). I decided to put Saxon on the spot and ask him to guess my age. I can’t remember if his guess was in the 30s or 40s, but he (very gentlemanly) admitted that he’d never have guessed I was 53. I love being a shortie who stays out of the sun and has just a handful of grays. LOL
On the last day, Crop Top Nick (Mathew), sat near us in the bleachers after he was finished. He chatted with us like we were gym buddies. Love this community!
I can’t believe I’d forgotten to post this pic of me and Brent Fikowski! Years ago (2021), he had liked one of my Instagram posts from the CrossFit Open, and I felt so cool pointing that out to people at Kilter. I told him about that, and he said I was the third person to tell him that just in that weekend. I showed him the photo, and was shocked to see the difference. Of course, that made me feel like a million bucks.
(This is that old pic.) I told him that I’d lost about 27% of my body weight, and being all nice and Canadian, he wanted to sound kind and told me, “I’m trying to think of how to say this… I’m just going to say it: You’re short.” I replied with a chuckle, “Yes, I’m aware.” Then he explained that his point was that had I mentioned the # of pounds lost, it might have not sounded as impressive (because weight is really subjective when you think about ability to lift barbells), but the percentage really stands out.
That conversation tied with the Wooley/Panchik convo for my favorite moments of the trip. Of course, I also enjoyed spending time with Sara, Liam (and celebrating his birthday), and running into fellow Kilter athlete, Tracy.
Ready to watch fitnessing with Sara!
Better pic of us by the arch.
Breakfast bagel and lox for Liam, the birthday boy.
Ran into Tracy outside the ladies room. What a fun surprise!
For the uninitiated, this competition is not an official CrossFit event. It’s an alternative to the CrossFit competition season, and a primary focus is athlete safety and input. You’d think that the originator of this sport would do that, but they don’t. I don’t even want to link to this because I no longer support CrossFit as an organization (though I still love the sport and the community!), so go ahead and Google CrossFit Games 2024 tragedy. Anyway, I really hope this WFP thing continues to grow. And if it does, I can brag that I was at the inaugural event of the very first season.
